Before we laid ourselves down to sleep, the elder Tahitian fell onhis knees, and with closed eyes repeated a long prayer in hisnative tongue. On two days the thermometer within the tent stoodfor some hours at 93 degrees; but in the open air, in the wind andsun, at only 85 degrees. PLATE 68. At first sight it appears not a little remarkable that thefresh water should regularly ebb and flow with the tides; and ithas even been imagined that sand has the power of filtering thesalt from the sea-water. A few days afterwards I crossed the bay with a party of officers,and landed near the fort called Niebla. From these facts I believe that the waders, after theinnumerable web-footed species, are generally the first colonistsof small isolated islands. A little rubbed on paper gave it a faint rose tinge mingled with alittle brick-red. From the greatpreponderance in most countries of certain common genera of birds,such as the finches, one feels at first surprised at meeting withthe peculiar forms above enumerated, as the commonest birds in anydistrict. Supposing they examine the track of a thousand horses, they willsoon guess the number of mounted ones by seeing how many havecantered; by the depth of the other impressions, whether any horseswere loaded with cargoes; by the irregularity of the footsteps, howfar tired; by the manner in which the food has been cooked, whetherthe pursued travelled in haste; by the general appearance, how longit has been since they passed.
