219 Fall 2008 Fourth Paper Topic For the final paper in the course, you have a choice between three poems . Please note that there’s a general prompt for all papers below, but each poem also has its own set of questions, for a more specific focus. The paper should be 5-6 pages long , typed in Times New Roman (12-pt.) and double-spaced, with 1” margins. Please follow the formatting guidelines we distributed, available on Sakai under “Resources→Writing Resources,” and refer to “Writing Tips for 219” for additional help. It will be due on December 10 at 11:00am. (You must upload the paper to Sakai under “Assignments” – BUT you should also bring a hard copy to our make-up section meeting that day if you’re coming.) For all papers: Your final paper should reflect a synthesis of the elements of poetry we’ve discussed throughout the semester—you are responsible for employing all of the language about poetry (from stanza form to meter to metaphor to apostrophe, etc…) you’ve learned in order to discuss the poem you choose. You should notice structural, thematic, and formal features of the poem, and then you should analyze them for meaning in the context of a larger point, or argument about the poem.
