1. Exam #1 on Thursday 2/12 bring pencil, id, and id #. Species remaining to be described: Described species: 1.4 million This is very little compared to what is not described. Samuel Bass: developed a biosphere in between phoenix and Tucson, Arizona. It consisted of biosphere #2. He asked to find 8 people to live in the biosphere for two years in which they would be sealed with communications. It was the attempt to make several types of ecosystems within a few acres. There were four thousand species of animals. A marsh, a desert, thorn shrub, savannah, rain forest, etc. tried to simulate earth’s ecology and ended up turning the whole thing over to Columbia University. It built up noxious gasses and it made invasive species thrive. They were forced to put out a red signal because they would have died if they stayed for two years. That’s one aspect dealing with ecosystems. Portrait of Animals: size based on diversity. Insects, mammals, crustations and non-insects, earth worms.
