Tyler Lisowski 1/09/2010 Period 6 Topic #3: Faber’s opinion about society and the importance of reading. Fahrenheit 451 (pages 81-83, 86) Main Event: Faber explains how society needs to see its imperfections and be allowed to express emotion. Main topics addressed in Faber’s lecture on society and reading 1. Statements made about present day society (as depicted in Fahrenheit 451) a. Society manipulates influential figures, like Jesus Christ, to brainwash the citizens. In this example society completely alters Jesus Christ’s identity to become part of the family and market products. The citizens of the society get a false representation of Jesus and the only way they can realize that he actually is different is by reading, which is banned in their society. i. “Lord, how they’ve changed it in our ‘parlors’ these days Christ is one of the ‘family’ now. I often wonder if God recognizes His own son the way we’ve dressed him up, or is it dressed him down?” (81) 1. Faber says this quote to Montag. It describes how the figure of Jesus was manipulated to influence society as a whole in a certain way. b.
