Light Intensity vs. Rate of Photosynthesis By- Gautham Giri Photosynthesis Experiment #1 Lab Report I NTRODUCTION Photosynthesis is the building up of sugars using carbon dioxide and water as the raw materials. The energy for the process comes from light and a green pigment called chlorophyll allows the plant to transfer the energy from light to sugar. The chemical equation for this process is: 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O = C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 + energy This experiment served to determine the affects of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis. Our group tested it on three different light intensities: bright, medium, dark. But note that it was not really bright; it was cloudy that day. The rate of photosynthesis was measured by looking at the amount of oxygen produced, which is a product of photosynthesis, generated by the plant. The greater the volume of the oxygen produced, the greater the rate of photosynthesis. So we tested what light intensity made photosynthesis in the leaf happen the quickest. Note that we want to measure the oxygen amount produced, and thus want to get rid of the carbon dioxide being produced by the leaf. For this, we use sodium bicarbonate. More of this will be explained later on, in this lab report. Plants can only photosynthesis during the day, as light is needed. The rate at which a plant photosynthesizes depends on the conditions in which it’s kept, especially the light intensity, the amount of carbon dioxide available, the temperature, and the amount of water available. H YPOTHESIS Our hypothesis was that as the light intensity increases, the rate of photosynthesis will increase. We came up to this hypothesis because if there’s more light, the faster the rate of photosynthesis. This is because the more light you add, more energy is gained.
