Course Objectives A. To increase understanding and integration of the basic principles, practices and techniques of effective public speaking. B. To explore principles of listening and perception in order to enhance speaking abilities. C. To increase confidence and poise when speaking to audiences or groups. D. To examine how public speaking contributes to our greater life purpose and role as citizens in caring and meaningful communities. II. Required Reading II. Required Text: THE ART of PUBLIC SPEAKING , 2009, by Steven Lucas. Publisher:  McGraw-Hill, 10 th  edition, ISBN: 9780077306298. This text is available at most bookstores supplying  the university, and at  http://shopmcgraw-hill.com You have a few options for purchasing the required materials. The content and page numbers will be the same, but the format is different. **Please note that this is the last semester in this edition of the text – so buyback value will be low. If you want to buy the 9 th edition of this book, you are responsible for comparing it to the 10 th edition and knowing the differences (they are minimal). 1) The cheapest option is to rent this text. Many past students used http://www.chegg.com (running under $30.00 for the text part.) or 2) You can also buy this book ‘used’ without purchasing the online access code. We will use Sakai anyway for the online information, which is free. The online resources are not ‘required.’ (the tenth edition is currently on half.com for around $67.00) or 3) If you want the book and the online resources, you can: a. buy a hard copy of the used book for around $75.
