Study guide  Chapter 11 Material in Chapter 11 will go  through  precipitation heat treating, but will not  include “Crystallization, Melting, and Glass Transition Phenomena in  Polymers”  Know and understand the following things for Chapter 11: 1. Understand the general aspects of nucleation theory, including the  concept of driving force, and the influence of undercooling, and the  resisting effect of surface energy. Understand the concept of critical  radius, r*, and how undercooling decreases it and aids nucleation. You do not need to be able to perform the mathematical nucleation  derivations. 2. Understand the concept of homogeneous and heterogeneous  nucleation, and why heterogeneous nucleation is the predominant  mechanism.  3. Understand the general form of the fraction transformed vs. time  kinetics curve. 4. Understand the shape of the isothermal transformation curve, i.e.,
