EML 3301C – Mechanics of Materials Laboratory Lab no. 5, Spring 2011 Tension Testing of Metallic Materials Objective: This lab is designed to demonstrate the use of a universal testing machine to perform tension testing of metals, and to perform analysis of the stress-strain curve. Equipment needed: Instron universal testing machine Instron extensometer Metal tension specimens Calipers and micrometers Optical microscope Problem Statement: Identify the material tested in the universal testing machine by its stress-strain response. Assignment Notes: You will be given three metal samples to test with the universal testing machine. From the stress-strain response, you will perform analysis to determine various properties of the sample. From handbook values, you will be tasked with identifying the material. ASTM E8 provides guidelines for these tests. Procedure: 1) Measure the cross section of each of the test specimens with the micrometer and calipers supplied in your tackle box. 2)
