EML 2322L Designing Hubs (Mechanical Power Transmission) Hubs are used to transmit mechanical power from a drive motor by coupling it to an output such as a wheel or an arm. The picture above shows an exploded view of a typical hub/motor/wheel assembly. In this picture the hub slides over the output gear of the drive motor and is secured using set screws. The wheel is then pressed onto the hub and can be secured in several ways. Below is a more detailed picture of hub used in the above assembly.

Things to Consider When Designing Hubs: 1. Attaching the hub to the motor 2. Attaching the wheel or other power transmission device to the hub 3. Transmitting the power through the hub 1. Attaching the hub to the motor The first step in designing a hub is determining how it will be attached to the drive motor. This is commonly done by measuring the output shaft/drive of the motor and designing the hub to fit. The hub shown previously is designed so that the bore on one side is the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of the gear on the drive motor. This allows the hub to slide onto the drive gear of the motor. 2. Attaching the wheel or other power transmission device to the hub The second step in designing a hub is determining how it will be attached to the wheel or other power transmission device. Wheels, for example can be attached in several different ways. The two most common ways are to mate the hub to the center hole in the wheel, or to mate the hub to the face of the wheel.
