Unformatted text preview: PEM Fuel Cell 1 8/19/2005 LECTURE LECTURE LECTURE LECTURE # # # # 17 17 17 17 TOPIC TOPIC TOPIC TOPIC: P E M F u e l C e l l s PEM Fuel Cell 2 8/19/2005 s Individual fuel cells have an maximum output voltage on the order of 1 VDC s Physically, each fuel cell consists of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which consists of the anode, cathode, electrolyte and catalyst, sandwiched between two flow field plates made of graphite s The plates channel the fuel and air to opposite sides of the MEA s Coolant is used to regulate the fuel cell reaction temperature - cooling plates are placed between each fuel cell which channel the coolant past the fuel cells to absorb or supply heat as required PEM Fuel Cell Stack Construction PEM Fuel Cell 3 8/19/2005 s Seals between the graphite plates ensure that the oxidant, fuel and coolant streams never mix within the fuel cells s Electrical endplates are placed at either end of the series of flow field plates and are connected to the terminals from which the output power is extracted, and typically include the fluid and gas interface connections s Practical fuel cell design focuses on achieving a high power output per area of membrane, scaling the active membrane area to a useful size, and making the overall stack suitably compact PEM Fuel Cell Stack Construction PEM Fuel Cell 4 8/19/2005 s Critical areas of concern are seals, flow field pattern tolerances and cell alignment s The resulting design must be b Reliable b Manufacturable b Economically viable b Have a significant operating life PEM Fuel Cell Stack Construction PEM Fuel Cell 5 8/19/2005 s The MEA is the heart of the fuel cell s The MEA consists of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched between two porous carbon electrodes s A platinum catalyst is integrated between the membrane and the electrodes s The electrode assemblies often include integral seals where they contact adjacent components PEM Fuel Cell Stack Construction PEM Fuel Cell 6 8/19/2005 s The electrodes provide the interface between the reactant gases and electrolyte s As such they must allow wet gas permeation, provide a reaction surface where they contact the electrolyte, be conductive to the free electrons that flow from anode to cathode, and be constructed of compatible materials s Carbon fiber paper is typically used for this purpose since it is porous, hydrophobic (non-wettable), conductive and...
