Unformatted text preview: PV Systems Factors Affecting PV System Cost Grid or non-grid connected Size of the system Local policies and rebates Advance in technologies PV Systems Factors Affecting PV System Cost Grid connected systems can cost on the order of magnitude $5,000/kW less than on-grid connected systems Favorable policies and rebates can reduce PV system cost by as much as $4,000/kW Advances in technology are reducing costs by as much as $600/kW per year PV Systems Factors Affecting PV System Cost System costs decrease about $40/kW with each additional kW increase in system size In 1997 a study in California indicated that grid connected systems were costing on the average $7,400/kW verses $14,000/kW for non-grid connected systems. A 2001 publication indicates $3,000 to 5,000/kW for a grid connected system after a 30-50% rebate by the utilities. PV Systems Design Considerations for PV Systems Consider the users needs, e.g. reduce monthly electric bills, environmental benefits, desire for back-up power, initial budget constraints, etc. Ensure roof area is large enough and structurally sound to handle additional load (over and above snow loads, wind loads, etc.) of PV panels PV Systems Design Considerations for PV Systems Specify sunlight and weather resistant...
