EML 6417 Solar Utilization Homework No. 3 Due September 18, 2009 1. A heat exchanger in a solar storage tank is to deliver heat to the storage media at a rate of 630,000 btu/h (185kW). The fluid from the solar collector bank is water with a minimal concentration of corrosion inhibitors and no glycol for freeze protection. The water enters the heat exchanger at 180 deg F(82deg C) and leaves at 160 deg F(71deg C). What flow rate of solar heated fluid is required, gpm? If the pipe servicing the heat exchanger with this solar heated fluid is schedule 40 steel pipe, what pipe size would you recommend?(since the fluid is circulated with a pump, sizing based on LCC would be the best). 2. The collector loop to the storage tank described above is made up of the following components: 420 feet of pipe (even though this pipe might be made up of different sizes based on the flow it carries, assume the average pressure loss factor is 2.5 ft/100ft for all this pipe) 10 elbows (long radius) at 2.5 ft/100 ft pressure loss factor

Just for fun, take the developed length of pipe (420 ft) multiply by 1.2 and add the pressure drops for the AS, storage tank and collector array and see if you get about the same answer.
