1 Solar Utilization Thermal Storage There are several ways to store energy (hydraulic, geothermal, chemical such as in batteries, plants) but the emphasis of this lecture and chapter in your book is on thermal energy storage . Thermal energy storage is not just restricted to solar systems: can be used to reduce operating and initial costs in conventional systems can be used to reduce size of electrical service and cooling or heating equipment increase operating flexibility provide back-up capability extend the capacity of an existing system

2 Solar Utilization Thermal Storage Thermal storage is particularly attractive to meeting heating and cooling loads if one or more of the following conditions exist: loads are of short duration loads occur infrequently loads are cyclical loads are not coincident with energy source availability (solar) energy costs are time-dependent e.g. time-of-day metering charges for peak demand are high energy rebates, etc. are offered for load shifting, demand limiting equipment

3 Solar Utilization Thermal Storage Thermal storage is particularly attractive to meeting heating and cooling loads if one or more of the following conditions exist: energy supplies are limited, newly developing countries facility expansion is planned and existing equipment cannot meet peak capacity but can meet non-peak capacity interruption of cooling water cannot be tolerated due to critical operations e.g. computer equipment cooling Abridged from the 2007 ASHRAE Applications Handbook
