Molecule A is not conjugated because it adopts a conformation in which the pi bonds are perpendicular to avoid significant torsional strain between the methyl groups. Pi bonds must be coplanar to be conjugated. 2. Several answers are possible. Here are two: O O CH 3 H 3 C O O 3. C 12 H 21 NO 8 S For the formula of an organic compound, we write the number of carbons, followed by the number hydrogens, then all remaining elements in alphabetical order. 4. Topiramate has 17 sp 3 atoms. All carbons, and all oxygens other than those is the OSO 2 NH 2 portion of the molecule, are sp 3 . 5. Oxygen (3.5) > nitrogen (3.0) > carbon and sulfur (both 2.5) > hydrogen (2.1). 6.
