JOUR 3410 8-18-2010 Qualities of News: Found in Rich textbook about what makes something news - Timeliness - Proximity (death in neighborhood is more important in your community than several deaths further away) - Conflict (partisan, psychological, idealogical, etc.) - Impact (does it affect people’s lives?) - Unusual nature - Helpfulness - Celebrities - Entertainment - Human Interest (inspirational stories) - Community issues (hyper-local news: zoning, buildings, environmental, etc.) - Trends An Improved (and shorter) list: News is anything that is - Relevant - Useful - Interesting But all of this depends on your audience - The audience for the Red & Black is different than the audience for the NY Times - Audience matters so weigh the criteria on the basis of who you work for and the nature of your audience What makes it News?
