7/11/2011 Defining Communication: What are we studying? Definitions have greater or lesser utility Determine how useful it is: - Does it describe the concept well? - Does it help you to discriminate between things that are the concept and things that are not the concept? Definitions: S.S. Stevens : Communication is a discriminatory response by an organism to a stimulus - Communication occurs when a living thing responds differently to some stimuli than to others. Elements of the Definition: - Organism: communication occurs among living things - Stimulus : information - Response : any sort of reaction - Discriminatory Response : reactions are not always the same. They change as stimulus changes. How useful is Steven’s definition? - Does it describe communication well? o Doesn’t take into account context of messages o Too exclusive in reference to living things (advertisements can communicate) - Does it discriminate well? o NO o According to this definition, what would not be considered communication? o Pretty much anything is communication Berlo: One cannot not communicate. - You communication something all the time (what you wear, hand gestures, posture/stance, etc.) - West and Turner say “interpersonal communication is unavoidable” - Communication occurs when one person ascribes meaning to another person’s behavior - The one receiving the information is in charge of determining the meaning How useful is Berlo’s definition? - Does it describe communication well? o NO doesn’t tell you what it is only that it exists - Does it discriminate well? o NO just tells you that it happens all the time and covers everything Miller: Communication occurs when a source shares a message with one or more receivers with the intent of influencing the receivers’ behaviors.
