Lab 9 1.Drawing 2 chromosomes the same size and length while carrying genes for the same traits. The colored card represents alleles. One allele is one of the chromosomes in the homologous pair, and the other is in the same location on the other chromosome in the pair. 2. Drawing 1 card of each color and placing all these cards in an “egg” or sperm”; the # of cards in the gamete is half the number you started with. 3. Fertilization is represented by combining the cards in a “sperm” with the cards in an “egg” 4. An individual with a sickle cell trait is a heterozygote; there is an equal chance of passing on the recessive allele. 5. Combining DNA fragments from 2 different sources into one molecule 6. A restriction enzyme recognizes a specific sequence of base in DNA and cuts the DNA at a specific site between nucleotides. Single stranded DNA at the ends f the DNA fragments (“sticky ends”) can stick to complimentary stretches of DNA by base-pairing. 2 fragments of DNA from different sources but cut by the same restriction enzyme will have identical sticky ends and can be spliced together. 7. A pattern of restriction fragments is unique to an individual.
