Group 1 Section 8 Company Coca-Cola Company Good start. The strategic problem needs to be defined more clearly. Current Issue: "How to market products in a mature market while making ethical and socially responsible decisions." What specific aspect of business is this lack of marketing attention hurting? So far, if CocaCola markets 3300 brands - why do they need to do anything differently? Please clarify the reasons. 1 Good industry definition and five forces analysis. Say more about what your overall conclusion about the attractiveness of the industry will mean for CocaCola, and potentially for its strategy toward being more environmnetally responsible? 2 Resources are clear. Capbailities need to be described more clearly. "Leading market presence" is not a capability. Lastly, Use VRIN to analyze specific resources/capabilities. Then decide which of the resources/ capabilities lead to competitive advantage. 2 OK. The first two recommendations need more thought. "Due to the high power of rivalry in the soft-drink industry, the Coca-Cola Company will require the global pursuance of vertical diversification in order to increase profits." - This is not clear at all. Increasing business volume through diversification is interesting. Your recommendations need to be tied to your internal and external environment analysis. Then analyse the pros and cons of each recommendation, and make your final recommendation. 1 Interim Draft Score (max 8 pts) 6 Step 1 (3 pts max) Step 2 (2 pts max) Step 3 (2 pts max) Step 4 (1pt max)

"McDonald’s must now invest money in research and development to come up with a way to approach the new health and social responsibility epidemic." Why? What impact has this trend had on business? What are the future implications? You can clarify the strategic problem even further. 2 Good use of the external environment analysis to identify specific areas of weakness - Sociocultural and Political. How will you address these areas? Also, say more about what your overall conclusion about the attractiveness of the industry will mean for McDonalds, and potentially for its strategy toward being more environmnetally responsible? 2 Good explanation for capabilities. "we have concluded that none of their capabilities are valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable all together." Ok, but please demonstrate this with a VRIN analysis before you conclude that none resources /capabilities are core competencies. How has McDonalds dominated the market for so long, without any core competencies? Be careful with formatting. 1 How can McDonalds carve out a new niche in healthy foods? What resources/capabilities do they possess that will enable them to do so? Power and financial means notwithstanding, what experience do they have in providing healthy fast food? What about the intensity of industry rivalry? So far, McDonalds has been profitable by offering some healthy items, and resorting to Dollar menus during times of economic recession. Is this sufficient? Can you come up with anything else?
