Seth Braunstein Professor Monroe Thursday March 31 st , 2011 “A Film Unfinished” The movie “A Film Unfinished” directed by Yael Hersonski is based on the 60 minute uninterrupted, raw footage filmed by the Nazis of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. The film titled “Ghetto” was stashed away in a German archive and not recovered until years later in 1954. The footage was eventually found by historians trying to piece together the facts of the events that took place during the Holocaust in the Warsaw Ghetto. “A Film Unfinished” presents this original footage in its entirety with commentary to elaborate and explain the different scenes being filmed. The footage from “Ghetto” was a German film intended to stage different events to show through propaganda what the Germans wanted the world to see. Many of the different staged scenes ranged from elegant Jews strolling in the streets, to young children living in complete poverty. The purpose of this film was for the Germans to annihilate the Jewish reputation in all ways possible while at the same time making it seem like the Germans provided the Jews with wonderful treatment in the ghetto. An interesting scene from the film arises when we witness the Germans using elegant objects such as flowers to decorate a Jewish apartment on film, when in reality the Jews were experiencing such starvation that they “would’ve eaten the flowers”. The filmmakers were told by the German propaganda experts to film different inhumane events such as overcrowded housing and human feces in the streets. Another example of this was when the Germans ordered richer elegant-looking Jews to stand there smiling while beggar children
