The motivation for performing the action is important… its called your good will which means your rational will consistentcy Value for Kant is all about rationality, we use it and respect it to make rational decisions which is our good will or rational will which is a will with respect to the moral law The moral law is the categorical imperative (Command that holds up under any specific circumstance) For categorical imperative (1 st formulation/form of universal law) Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it become a universal law. (Supreme principle of morality from book) (Can we imagine a world in which everyone does this same thing and would it be acceptable) Kant Second Section: 414-416 IMP (421-423) (424-425) (427-430) Reason is good will Good Will: Sense of duty with respect to moral law=Categorical Imperative Motivation or volition or reason to act-action-consequence Kant cares most about the motivation/volition/reason for the action wheras Util cares
