Blackboard Site: http://bb.rhsmith.umd.edu The purpose of this course is to provide you with insight into the theory and methods of marketing research with a very applied and process orientation. The focus in the course will be on the following issues: Learning the research process. This includes formulating and defining the market research problem & hypotheses, deciding what information is needed, developing a data collection instrument, and collecting data. The first ½ of the semester will address these issues and will be primarily qualitative in nature. Learning how to analyze market research data to make marketing recommendations. The second ½ of the semester will address these issues and will be primarily quantitative in nature. You will learn various statistical techniques such as t-tests, cross-tabulations, ANOVA, and regression analysis. You will also learn how to use SPSS statistical software to perform these analytical procedures. Course Materials: Text - Marketing Research by McDaniel and Gates, Wiley Publishing, 8 th Edition, ISBN 978-0470-08702-2 SPSS Software – SPSS is the statistical software package that will be used for the data analysis portion of this course. SPSS is an industry standard used by market researchers. A student version of SPSS comes packaged with your textbook. In addition, SPSS is installed on the PCs in computer labs around campus and can also be accessed via the R.H. Smith School Portal ( https://portal.rhsmith.umd.edu/login ).

Grading: Exam 1 20% Individual Exam 2 15% Individual Exam 3 (Final, not cumulative) 15% Individual 10% Team Survey Critique Project 15% Team SPSS Data Analysis Project Part I 5% Team SPSS Data Analysis Project Part II 20% Team For this course, the following grading policy will be utilized: A+ 97+ B+ 87+ C+ 77+ D+ 67+ A 93-96 B 83-86 C 73-76 D 63-66 A- 90-92 B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D- 60-62 Anything below 60 is an F. If you have any questions about your grades during the semester, please feel free to contact me. There usually is no curve in this class.
