Unformatted text preview: Roshan Shah Chem 272 ' 3/ 10/10 Experiment ZB Discussion Questions 1. When you have a strong base such as NaOH titrated with a strong acid such as HNOg, the pKa should be neutral, which is around 7. A strong base would have higher pKa whereas a strong acid would have a low pKa. They would 03M other and be neutral. The only indicator which shows a neutral pKa is Te in Yellow which has a pKa of 7.4. Maryland Red has a low pKa and Terpel Purple has a high pKa, so the median would be the Terrapin Yellow. 2. Assuming the film form of the indicator is the only form present in the most acidic solution is not a valid assumption. We are assuming that in the most acidic solution, we would only get H30+ and none of In'. This is not valid because since we can find a Ka from the pKa, this means that there is a concentration of In' present. Iused an ice table and calculated the concentration of In", and even if it’s a small amount, it still nulliiies our assumption. I used an ice table and the quadratic equation to find the concentration of In, which was 2.765 * IDA—6. This is a very small amount, but even this insignificant amount makes our assumption invalid. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
