LE PREPOSIZIONI SEMPLICI A usually means  to/at  in English: Ex.:   Vado a Milano ogni anno.  ( I go to Milan every year. ) Noi andiamo a N.Y.  ( We are going to N.Y. ) Vado a casa.  ( I go [to] home. ) Vado a scuola.  ( I go to school. ) BUT Vado all’università.  ( I go to the university. ) A also expresses distance in Italian and conveys the idea of being a certain distance  away from a certain place: Ex.:    I miei nonni abitano a due miglia da noi.  ( My grandparents live two miles away  from us. ) IN means “ in”  in English and corresponds to “ to”   in English when used before the  names of countries, regions, or continents: Ex.: Mi piace andare in Toscana.  ( I like to go to Tuscany. ) Firenze è in Toscana.  ( Florence is in Tuscany. ) Andiamo in Europa, in Marland, in California!  ( Let’s go to Europe, Maryland,  California! ) IN also expresses means of transportation in Italian and it is equivalent to the preposition  by  in English: Ex.:  in macchina = by car in treno = by train in aereo = by plane in autobus = by bus in bicicletta = by bicycle *in barca = by boat
