COGS 1 – FA07 Week 5 Virginia de Sa – Learning to See Some of the central challenges to studying vision are: 1) There is an of 3-D scenes that can give rise to a given 2-D representations 2) The same object can give rise to multiple 2-D representations (Object Recognition) Early Methods of Studying Vision: 1) Adults given vision later in life a. Woman unable to map visual input to identification b. Patients had to count corners on shapes to distinguish triangle or square Current Methods of Studying Vision: 1) Single-cell Electrophysiology (for individual/small groups of neurons) a. Determine what cells respond to i. Neurons in V1 – response strength depends on orientation of object (tuning curve) 2) Optical Imaging (groups of neurons/large areas of cortex) a. Look down at surface of brain (voltage sensitive dye or intrinsic imagining-similar to fMRI) b. Response areas are smoothly varying across cortex and overlap slightly with one another c. Distinct pathways in visual cortex – “what” and “where” pathways
