Tathagata Bhattacharjee 2 Managing Hardware Devices and Drivers Hardware includes any devices that is connected to the computer when it was manufactured, as well as peripheral equipment added later. Some devices are connected to expansion slots inside the computer. Some devices are connected to ports on the outside of the computer. Each device has its own unique device driver.

Tathagata Bhattacharjee 3 Device Driver A device driver is a program that controls a particular type of device that is attached to the computer. There are device drivers for printers, displays, CD-ROM readers, diskette drives, and so on. Many device drivers are built into the operating system.

A device driver essentially converts the more general input/output instructions of the operating system to messages that the device type can understand.
