4 Data Link Control ± Flow Control: ¾ Required for situation where sender may send data at faster rates than receiver can receive. ¾ Enables a receiver to regulate the flow of data from a sender so that the receivers buffers do not overflow ± Error Detection: ¾ Detects the errors in received data at the receiver ± Error Control: ¾ If error, retransmission of damaged frames ¾ Correction of the error bit

5 Error detection ± Additional bits added by transmitter for error detection purpose ± Parity check: ¾ Value of parity bit is such that character has even (even parity) or odd (odd parity) number of ones ¾ Data along with parity character is transmitted ¾ L ongitudinal R edundancy C heck (LRC): ¾ Even number of bit errors goes undetected due to this method ¾ V ertical R edundancy C heck (VRC): ¾ This can be implemented in addition to LRC ¾ Requires additional overhead bits
