obin Jung Min, SON Thumb and finger Thumb:Varus / Valgus Stress Test Procedure: The examiner stabilises the patient’s hand at the 1st metacarpal with thumb and finger pad contact of one hand. The MCP joint is held in extension and valgus or varus stress is applied to the MCP joint. The test is repeated with the thumb flexed 30 degrees The test is performed bilaterally with the uninvolved side Positive sign: Laxity greater than 30-35 degrees = complete tear Laxity less than 30-35 degrees = partial tear (usually with pain) Flexion of the MCP joint localises the test to the collateral ligaments Purpose / Indication: Finger: Varus / Valgus Stress Test Procedure: The practitioner stabilises the patients finger proximal to the joint being assessed. With the second contact the practitioner applies valgus / varus force while the joint is held in the extended position. The test is repeated with the joint flexed 30 degrees. The test is performed bilaterally with the uninvolved side being assessed
