ENGRI 1101 Engineering Applications of OR Fall ’09 Homework 8 Linear Programming Due date: 4:00pm on Friday, November 6, 2008 in the ENGRI 1101 box at the west end of the corridor on the second floor of Rhodes Hall, where it connects to Upson. Reading assignment: Chapter 3 of Winston and Chapter 2 of Chvatal (included in coursepack). Make sure to put your name, netid, and lab section on the first page and staple the problems in order. 1. (a) (15) Solve the following 2-variable linear program by the graphical method: maximize x + 2 y subject to x 6 y 4 3 x + 2 y 17 y - 8 x 0 x 0 y 0 (It would probably help to use cross-section/graph paper for this problem.) (b) (5) What would be the optimal solution if we further constrained x and y to be integers? Be sure to explain your answer. (c) (10) Now answer both of the previous questions again if the objective function were changed to be to maximize y - x . Again, be sure the justify your answers.
