SOCIAL AND CULTURAL PROCESSES BUILDING FOR AND AGAINST TIME Social Factors February 24, 2010 The term culture indicates that shared beliefs, values and styles of behavior are passed on to others - Socialization and education of new members help preserve consensus of culture form one generation to the next. - The greatest difference between people isn’t space but culture. - Time and Culture Acuma Pueblo- Everything is God. - Europeans- ownership and power is what symbolizes we Vernacular- An architecture which embraces the native language of a region, whose form has evolved and adapted over time to local material, climate and culture. Think of it as Darwinian or adaptation, survival of the fittest. - Feedback loop adaptation, evolution - Acuma Pueblo is vernacular - Can we build - Vernacular form-derived by a region and culture - Vernacular style- architect copies a certain style. Two fundamental concepts inherent to understanding veenacluar arch are: - Time- have evolved over time through trial and error. The design adapts to these changes. - Cluture- not copied from somewhere else. A regional dialect and the differences of people. o “Dwelling is an activity that lies beyond the reach of the architect … above all because no two communities dwell alike. Habit and habitat say almost the same.
