Bold Stroke for a Husband Woman’s lit February 18, 2010 By Hannah Cowley- revolves around marriage and how woman strive to overcome injustices imposed by family life and social customs. - Much more subtle with her challenge to the middle class and putting fire to societies feet. History- written in the 1830’s where the elevation of woman in which belief that men were not needed as much. - War was flagrant and prideful (the greatest pride here was to be a part of war). Bold Strokes of War- if you want to be successful, you must be a bold solider. o Cowley believes that there could be something more than this and that’s what she strives for women to believe and elevate. Themes - Spanish setting as politicized and feminized o Elevates the English “ah look at the Spanish…” which represents to show the follies of society’s characters and uses this displacement to really attack the times at home. - Domestic Comedy- o Reaction to restoration comedy because you want to restore companion marriage. o Devaluing commitment to show the Value of it Break in society needs to be bridged or fixed. Shows what you have to have to have a good marriage or social union- what comedy is all about Restores the companionship especially in a time of war.
