INTRO TO VITRUVIUS AND THE SCENE ENVD 1004 March 30, 2010 Building as a Machine THE GEORGE POMPIDOU CENTER - 1971-1977 - Erupted in Old Paris - George Pompidou was the president of Paris - High-tech architecture- known as late modernism or Stuctural expressionism o Style that emerged in the late 1970’s incorportating elements of high-tech industry and technology into building design Themes like expressing their structure on the outside as well as the inside, but emphasis placed on the internal steel and concrete. - Flexibility was key- configuration of space- it could accommodate spaces that were not permanent and could adjust - Built by Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers and Su Rogers, Gianfranco Franchini. o Engineer Peter Rice - Houses public information, public library, museum and music research. - Cantilever System- Balance of tension- Uses gerberettes and I beam- but also the use of porticules makes it stable with tension cords. o
