Teachers: NAN Military : - There own groups representing them - Veterans groups: American Legion Governments themselves have - ICMA: lobby state gov and local for policies advent ages to the American states Special Interest groups - NRA: National Rifle of Arms: originally set up as a training program o Protecting the rights of Americans and protectors of the second amendment - AARP: American Association of Retired Persons o 1958 is a nonprofit - Environmental Groups: Sierra Club These all come together for a specific interest pushed onto the gov What are interest groups?: 3 definition Neutral : private orgs or ass. that seek to influence gov policies as a way to protect or advance some interest or concern. Negative : Special interest that seek advantage over other groups and against the public interest. Positive : An instrument of democracy, an alternative path by which Americans can influence their government. - A way to group and speak - Giving it a special designation. Theories of interest group Politics: Pluralism - Groups provide the key link between the people and the gov. - Politics is mainly a competition among groups and not individuals with each group pressing for its own preferred policies - Main centers of power exist with main diverse groups competing for power
