1BIOLOGY 1208: Spring 2011 LAB FINAL REMINDERS AND STUDY GUIDE WHEN: Week of 2 May - 8 May WHERE: 133 Life Sciences TIME: Regularly Scheduled Lab Time FORMAT: 100 points total ! Part I (75 %): Written portion of exam will focus on your understanding of what we DID in lab and WHY we did it. ! Part II: Practical Questions (25 %) will cover such topics as how to use the spectrophotometer, types of pipettes, how to read a pipette (max/min volume), fermentation lab set-up, photosynthesis lab set-up, molecular biology lab set-up. HOW TO STUDY: ! Study each laboratory exercise ! Study your quizzes ! Study the 1208 tutorials in Moodle STUDY SUGGESTIONS FOR THE PRACTICAL SECTION OF YOUR EXAM 1. Be able to identify (by name) the following types of pipettes: serological, Mohr, Volumetric, and Mechanical or Micropipettes (p100/p1000). You should also know the smallest/largest volume each pipette can deliver. 2. Know how to use the spectrophotometer to measure absorbance of a solution . Review the Moodle tutorial: Spectrophotometry 3. Know the basis of paper chromatography and gel electrophoresis . Questions will relate to a hypothetical chromatogram and gel. 4. Be familiar with the photosynthesis set-up: Quibit ® CO 2 Analysis Package/Equipment 5. Be familiar with the fermentation set-up: Quibit ® CO 2 Analysis Package/Equipment 6. Be familiar with the activities in the Photosynthesis 1 Lab 7. Be familiar with the activities in the “Movement of Substances Across Cell Membranes” lab 8. Be familiar with the activities in the Enzymes Labs STUDY SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITTEN/NON-PRACTICAL SECTION OF FINAL EXAM 1. You will have questions that involve data analysis and hypothesis formation
