Sleep  is an altered consciousness that has several disorders. One sleep disorder is sleep  apnea. My ex-husband suffers from sleep apnea, meaning he snores excessively loud and  stops breathing for periods of a time. A couple of years ago he had to check into a sleep clinic  overnight, so the clinic could assess the intensity of his condition. He now has a machine called  a C.P.A.P (continuous positive air pressure) that goes on his face to help him breathe at night.  When a person is in an altered consciousness state of  hypnosis , he or she is particularly  vulnerable to suggestion. Hypnosis has been used to help people with pain relief by having the  person no long pay conscious attention to the pain. Hypnosis is also used on people who want  to stop smoking, by causing them to believe the smell of cigarettes would cause the onset of  nausea.
