ALCON, INC. (C)** Alcon, Inc. manufactures, distributes and markets ophthalmic (eye) surgical equipment, contact lens care products and other consumer eye care products that treat diseases and conditions of the eye. Alcon’s broad range of products represents what many consider as the strongest portfolio in the ophthalmic industry. Alcon Laboratories Inc. began in 1945 at a Ft. Worth, Texas, pharmacy as a small, independent pharmaceutical manufacturer. Alcon specialized in certain areas of medicine with a strong focus on eye care products. In 1977, Alcon significantly increased its domestic and international capabilities by becoming a subsidiary of the world’s largest food company, the multi-national Nestle Corporation (Headquarters: Vevey, Switzerland). In 2002, Alcon, Inc., once again became an independent corporation. It is now totally focused on eye care. The organization’s home office remains in Switzerland with Alcon products being sold in over 180 countries. Total annual revenues of Alcon exceed $4 billion. New York Stock Exchange trading symbol: ACL. Alcon is now regarded as one of the most prestigious specialty companies in the entire pharmaceutical industry. It is constantly on the cutting edge of research and development. This is a strategic competitive advantage that helps keep Alcon ahead of the competition. Many pharmaceuticals are imitations of one or another competing in the market. However, Alcon puts strategic efforts into finding something new that will ultimately benefit the patient as well as the doctor. Examples of this may be seen through the many services offered by Alcon. One of these is the SERVA program that brings second and third year ophthalmology residents to the William C. Conner Research Center on the Ft. Worth campus of Alcon Laboratories for an all expenses paid day of lectures and discussions concerning the center's various research programs. Another
