Numberless other changes mustlikewise have taken place; the wild pig in some parts probablyreplaces the peccari; packs of wild dogs may be heard howling onthe wooded banks of the less-frequented streams; and the commoncat, altered into a large and fierce animal, inhabits rocky hills. In a troop each animal carries on a level road,a cargo weighing 416 pounds (more than 29 stone), but in amountainous country 100 pounds less; yet with what delicate slimlimbs, without any proportional bulk of muscle, these animalssupport so great a burden! The mule always appears to me a mostsurprising animal. They had nothing to eat excepting what they could catch, such asostriches, deer, armadilloes, etc. It has generally beensupposed that they were used as heads to clubs, although their formdoes not appear at all well adapted for that purpose. This is merelyan illustration of the admirable laws, first laid down by Mr. There is very little landcultivated even close to the town. All distances are inaccurately known. DECEMBER 26, 1835.
