CS 103 Botnets Botnets are software robots that run on zombie computers remotely by hackers . Botnets run programs such as worms , backdoors or trojans that run under a common infrastructure . A zombie computer is any computer that is connected to the internet that has been compromised by a hacker . Usually the computer user will not even know that a botnet is on the computer . The hacker who has launched the botnet can remotely control the group of computers remotely through an internet relay chat , or IRC , for malicious purposes . The botnet basically steals the resources of the computer that it is on . Many of the newer botnets can scan different computers and networks and spread to other computers without the hacker doing anything . Botnets have become very popular among hackers and have spread to many computers . The controllers of the botnet often use various different internet connections in order to successfully spread through networks . They also spread throughout varieties of networks , including government , military , educational and corporate networks . Many botnets are set on large sites so that many people can become infected with them . Botnet communities can be very large and can be connected to several high-speed computers that are used as servers . The way a botnet works is that the operator first sends out a virus that
