Review Sheet for History 1102 Midterm-Sept 30, 2010 Railroads -North won because of train usage, and because of success called for national  expansion of trains (1869) -After fed. gov’t gave land away (mile on each side of railroad), they re-sold lane  to make more profit -Caused national market and stimulated business, etc -Steel then developed, because harder and more flexible than iron, stimulated  steel industry (Carnegie) -Employment rose because diggers, bridge builders, etc, were needed -Capitalism boomed with competition of prices (never publishes, only negotiated) *John D. Rockefeller -Standard Oil Company of Ohio -He got special rates from railroad barons by getting rebates from  train shipping his competitor’s oil -Extremely wealthy would buy politicians because they would pass laws in their  favor; were often average schmos. Extreme divergence between rich and poor.  Immigrants/Unions -Immigrants coming by the droves from W. Europe; democrats saw immigrants as  potential voters and helped them with necessities if they voted Democratic.  -1880s Noble Order of the Knights of Labor tried to organize everyone into one  union, and did great, but they didn’t believe in strikes -1886, McCormick Reaper Plant strike (tried to improve worker morale in  Chicago) o Police make decision to stop strike, and begin to pummel people in the  crowd. Bomb was thrown into middle of police ranks; they started shooting  and arresting people; People left KOL.
