- 1 - Module 41 Expressed Emotion Module 42 Experienced Emotion I. In a crisis the autonomic nervous system arouses the body by switching on parts of the endocrine system (the hormones). A. The autonomic nervous system has two divisions 1. the sympathetic division 2. the parasympathetic division B. The sympathetic division directs the adrenal glands atop the kidneys to release “stress hormones” 1. epinephrine (also called “adrenaline”) 2. norepinephrine (also called “noradrenaline”) C. The “stress hormones” prepare the body for “fight or flight” (Walter Cannon) 1. increase heart rate 2. increase blood pressure 3. increase blood sugar levels D. The para sympathetic division cuts down the release of stress hormones, so the body slowly calms down E. The release of stress hormones improves performance on easy or well- learned tasks (skipping rope, spooling fishing reel, running) F. The release of stress hormones worsens performance on difficult or complex or not well learned tasks G. The mere presence of on-lookers has exactly the same effect 1. “social facilitation” (a topic in social psychology) – stems from the nervous system and the endocrine system 2. cockroaches H. When studying difficult or complex material 1. find a place to study alone 2. prepare for study with a combination of exercise and relaxation/meditation II. Specific emotions are not defined by the autonomic nervous system alone A. Similar rises in heart rate, etc., may accompany radically different emotions such as fear and anger. B. Autonomic nervous system activity is detected by “lie detectors.” 1. perspiration 2. changes in breathing 3. changes in the cardiovascular system (heart rate, etc.) C. What the “lie detector” records could be anxiety, irritation, or even fear. D.
