The Rhetoric of La Familia Among Mexican Americans Margarita Gangotena - People are looking at other cultures from a critical, Euro-American lens (WRONG!) o Reading provides perception of culture from the lens of that culture/perspective - Generalizations made of Euro-American families at beginning of the reading o Writer bias/ double standard o Didn’t contextualize/ do a full comparisons in order to focus on the Mexican American perspective instead of privileging the group that typically receives the most attention (whites) - Rationality and emotionalism (male macho) - Collectivistic cultures that share the aspect of harmony versus individualistic cultures o Perhaps reason she chose Euro-American culture to compare to Mexican American culture (because they contrast in individualism and collectivism) o Euro-American perspective held as norm/standard by society (perhaps a reason for choosing Euro-American culture to contrast from Mexican American culture) o
