Latina/o Experiences with Mediated Communication Diana I. Rios Social construct identity: sexual orientation, race, class, etc. - Identities are co-created by interactions with other people - Personally: family did not have as prevalent of a role in understanding my cultural identity o Growing up in predominantly white elementary school contributed to the lack of acknowledgment and understanding of my “Asian-ness” o Parents never taught me the language or attempted to preserve the culture through me o Wasn’t until high school, exposure to more students in same situation and student orgs that allowed me to interact with others with Asian background o College provided even more opportunities for me to connect to the Asian culture and embrace my “Asian side” Media: underlying agendas - Movies that portray races negatively/stereotypically o Examples: Lane Kim n Gilmore Girls o Movies that use a different ethnicity than the one they are supposed to be Example: using Chinese actors to play Korean characters o Rely on images as a source of information
