SPCM3820 Chapter 12: Moving from the Theoretical to the Practical Racial Assumption : a consciously or unconsciously held premise that is considered to be true regarding a race or ethnic group and that is acted on as though it were true. Cultural racism : people present their own racial/ethnic group’s cultural preferences and values as superior to those of other groups. Applied Research : helps people effectively resolve issues in interracial communication. Three benefits: 1. Helps people solve socially relevant problems. 2. Provides support for the “predictive validity of communication theory” based on the success of real-world tests (generalizability). 3. Makes clear the practicality of the communication discipline. Training Models : designed to discuss race-related issues, articulate them, examine them, find validity in other groups’ perspectives, and utilize others’ perspectives in order to work together effectively while striving toward common goals. -
