Chapter 2: History of Race Racial hierarchy being preserved - Media o Example: Blind Side (white family helps “underprivileged” black person) Controversy about story line and portrayal of race roles o “Token” person of a certain race Not dynamic Images become familiar Negative/stereotypical portrayals of minorities o Lack of social responsibility in the media - Blumenbach: created first classification of races o Later modifies classification system to reflect a hierarchy o “perceived superior beauty” - Resistance to talk about race o As a way to keep the dominant race in its place? - “History is in the past” o No longer have institutionalized slavery o Should we ignore it or how important is history’s role in current state? Many want to act like we are in a “post-racism” society History is reflected in how society interacts today Hodge (1989), racism is “the belief in, and practice of, the domination of one social group, identified as a ‘race,’ over another social group, identified as of another ‘race’”
