Mental Illness in the U.S. More than 25% of people will develop some form of  mental illness during their lifetime At least 40% of people with mental illness receive no  treatment Approximately 3.5 million people experience extreme  forms of mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar  disorder) yearly Half of NASW members indicate mental health as a  major practice area Social workers are the largest group of mental health  providers in the U.S. (60% of core mental health  professionals)
