Organization of the Brain 5/26/2010 Review:11 An afferent neuron carries information to the brain. Graded potentials are collected and integrated in the cell body . A neuron will fire with the same potency every time, referred to as the all or none principle. During propagation, depolarization moves down the axon . I. The Nervous System a. Central Nervous System (CNS) i. The Brain and Spinal Cord ii. Organizes and Evaluates information from the PNS b. Peripheral Nervous System i. All other nerve cells in the body not part of the CNS make up the PNS ii. Transmits information to the CNS iii. Made of two subsystems: 1. Somatic Nervous System a. Transmits sensory signals to the CNS b. Pathways by which sensory signals are brought to the CNS 2. Autonomic Nervous System a. Regulates the bodies internal environment b. Often studied in relationship to stress c. Two main divisions (together work to maintain state of homeostasis within the body): i. Sympathetic 1. Prepares body for action ii. Parasympathetic 1. Returns body to resting state (opposite to sympathetic)

IV. Midbrain a. Tracking of visual and auditory stimuli b. Made up of two parts: i. Superior colliculus 1. Visual tracking ii. Inferior colliculus 1. Auditory tracking V. Forebrain a. Everything above the midbrain b. Contains both cerebral cortex and subcortical structures c. Two hemispheres (Left and Right)
