Unit 9: Obesity to underweight: the highs and lows of weight status Body Mass Index: compares height and weight to estimate body fat content; weight in kg divided by height in meters o Underweight=under 18.5 kg/m^2 o Normal Weight=18.5-24.9 kg/m^2 o Overweight=25-29.9 kg/m^2 o Obese=30 or higher kg/m^2 Subcutaneous Fat: fat under the skin Visceral Fat: fat located under the skin and muscle of the abdomen Metabolism: chemical changes that take place in the body, like the conversion of glucose to energy; visceral fat is much more metabolically active than subcutaneous fat Insulin Resistance: condition in which cells resist the action of insulin in facilitating the passage of glucose into cells Metabolic Syndrome: metabolic abnormalities generally characterized by insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure and triglycerides, low HDL, and impaired glucose tolerance. It predisposes people to heart disease, hypertension, and other disorders Type 2 Diabetes: disease characterized by high blood glucose levels due to body’s inability to use insulin normally or to produce enough insulin. Typically onset in adults due to being overweight and unhealthy diets Apple Shape: predominant fat stores around waist; higher risk of cardiovascular disease due to high levels of visceral fat Pear Shape: narrower upper body with fat stored mainly in hips, upper arms, and thighs; less risk because less visceral fat; weight loss is difficult in these areas Visceral fat creates much greater risk for disease than subcutaneous fat because visceral fat is much more metabolically active. Many metabolic reactions taking place in visceral fat cells cause inflammation that leads to oxidation. Oxidation can lead to chronic inflammation over time, which damages other cells in the body. Chronic inflammation can lead to: plaque in arteries, osteoporosis, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. Review Questions:
