ME 382 Lecture 01 1 Students must know the following from ME211 Take any simple (non-redundant) engineering structure with arbitrary combination of axial, torsional & bending loads Draw free body diagram - determine what reaction forces/moments are unknown Calculate reaction forces/moments from equilibrium Calculate forces, bending moments & torques at any section Calculate all normal and shear stresses (6 in general but, two shear stresses will generally be zero in ME382) Use Mohrs circle of stress to calculate principal normal stresses and maximum shear stresses If this can’t be done, no point in proceeding in ME382!! ME382 1. Will these stresses cause failure? Need material properties & failure criteria Excessive deformation : Time independent: elastic (ME211) Time dependent: creep & viscoelasticity Strength of material exceeded Non-linear behavior: Yield Fracture: Static loading: brittle Cyclic loading: crack-based & stressed based Environmental degradation
