ME 382 Lecture 17 1 C ARBON STEELS CAST IRONS Equilibrium phase diagram contains 5 phases: L, δ , γ , α , Fe 3 C As wt% C increases: low- carbon “mild” steel; medium-carbon steel, high- carbon steel, cast iron Microstructures produced by slow cooling: Normalized steels 1. Essentially equilibrium microstructures from phase diagrams 2. Austenitzing : Heat treat by holding 55 ° C to 85 ° C above γ boundary (Essentially a solution heat treatment single phase solid solution C in γ ) 3. Cool in air to room temperature Eutectoid steels (0.8 wt% C)

ME 382 Lecture 17 2 Pearlite : very fine plates of ferrite ( α ) and (cementite) Fe 3 C Upon further cooling: Concentration of C in α Additional Fe 3 C formed in pearlite Hypoeutectoid steels ( < 0.8 wt% C) Hypereutectoid steels ( > 0.8 wt % C) Mechanical properties of normalized carbon steels Solubility of C in α is very small No solid-solution hardening Cementite phase is very hard (and incoherent)
