Leverette 1 Lacey Leverette Ms. Helana Brigman English 1001, Section 8 19 July 2010 Get in my Belly Surrogacy is the act of one woman carrying a child that has the opportunity to be related to either one, or both parents by using medical technology to fulfill the couple’s dreams of having a baby. According to Rayven Perkins is “Information on Surrogacy,” the most common users of a surrogate as a way to have a child that is biologically related to them are infertile couples. The use of a surrogate continues to be a popular and thriving business throughout the twenty-first century. Since surrogacy has become very popular within infertile couples, the use of a surrogate is more accepted and seen as a desirable method for building a family. However, there are many diverse views on the issue of surrogacy. Some people believe that using a surrogate can be an exciting and fulfilling way to create a family, while others believe that using a surrogate puts the child at risk of harm from having socially constructed family relationships rather than natural ones. No matter the argument, surrogacy continues to sweep across the globe. A further analysis of the issue of surrogacy will help give an extended knowledge on the debate around the issue. The idea of “renting a womb” is not a new thought by modern women. The history of surrogacy goes back to the dawn of time. Women in history leading up to present times have had trouble conceiving, and one way they could start a family was through surrogacy - this process was rarely documented. The first documented case of using a surrogate comes from the Bible in the story of Abraham and Sarah. Sarah experienced infertility and asked her
