Leaders are born, not made, because there are certain characteristics that make you a strong leader; the problem is there are many exceptions. Behavioral Leadership Theories Leadership Trait Theory Assumes that there are distinctive physical and psychological characteristics accounting for leadership effectiveness. Assumes that there are distinctive styles that effective leaders use consistently. Contingency Leadership Theories Behavioral Leadership Theories Leaders approach leading in different ways, so look at their methods to emulate them. Assumes that the appropriate leadership style varies from situation to situation. Leadership Trait Theory Contingency Leadership Theories Its not the characteristics or winning approach, but leaders can diagnose situations and change their style to fit that situation. Have certain qualifications that predispose us to be a leader. Democratic Autocratic The leader makes the decisions and closely supervises employees. The leader allows participation in decisions and does not closely supervise employees. Autocratic, Democratic, and Laissez- Faire Laissez-Faire The leader takes a leave-the-employee- alone approach. Basic leadership styles according to behavioral leadership theories: Impoverished Manager Country Club Manager Treat people like gold, but dont force them to do anything; high concern for people and low concern for production. Treat people like crap and still dont reach your objectives; low concern for people and production. Team Manager Sweatshop Manager Make your numbers no matter what; high concern for production and low concern for people. High concern for people and production; where you want to be. Leadership Grid Organized Person Manager Middle of the road manager, focusing exactly half on people and half on production. Can move around on the grid (i.e. when theres a big goal that needs to be met soon, become a sweatshop manager). Transformational Leadership Transformational Leadership Leadership thats about change, innovation, and entrepreneurship; reserved for senior- level managers. Recognize the need for revitalization, create a new vision, and institutionalize change. Charismatic Leadership Transformational Leadership Traits include change agents, courageous, believe in people and motivate them, value- driven, lifelong learners, able to deal with complexity, ambiguity, and uncertainty, and Inspires loyalty, enthusiasm, and high levels of performance. visionaries.
